Digital Policy

Digital Policy for Counselling Therapy Clients
Last Updated : 20 July 2026

This policy has been created to support clarity and safety for the people I work with in counselling therapy.  It is difficult to keep personal lives separate from clinical work and therefore this document outlines how I navigate online spaces and how this may relate to our work together.

My professional responsibility to protect your confidentiality means I do not discuss you or your circumstances in public forums or on social media.  All clients will receive a written contract from me that explains the limits of confidentiality.

I am registered with the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO). You can find more information about data protection and your rights here: https://ico.org.uk/for-the-public/

Maintaining Clear Boundaries Online

Digital communication can blur the lines between personal and professional spaces. The following sections explain how I manage different forms of digital contact.

Online Video Sessions

Online sessions take place via Vsee.  This is a platform that safeguards confidentiality using 256-bit AES and DTLS 1.2+ encryption.

WhatsApp

WhatsApp is end-to-end encrypted.  This is used as my main mode of communication in relation to practical matters such as scheduling appointments. I prefer that therapeutic or sensitive material is kept within our sessions unless we have agreed otherwise.

You are welcome to send a message if you are running late or need to notify me of something brief and practical.

Email

Email is best used for practical matters such as arranging or confirming appointments. I prefer that therapeutic or sensitive material is kept within our sessions unless we have agreed otherwise.  I will ask for your preferred email address when we begin our work together. Please be aware that emails are stored by Internet Service Providers and may be accessed by email providers such as gmail, so please assume they are not fully secure and take care with what you choose to include in an email.

My email address is:  All email communication from me will come from this address.  If you receive any communication claiming to be from me from a different email address, do not reply and contact me to let me know.

Social Media Platforms

I use various social media platforms in my capacity as a counsellor / therapist, and also have social media accounts for my personal use. To protect our relationship and to maintain appropriate boundaries, I do not accept friend or similar requests from current or former clients.

Occasionally, social networks reveal unexpected overlaps or mutual connections. If something of this nature arises, we can talk about it in session so we can understand its impact on our work together.

Search Engines

I do not search for information about my clients. I want to learn about you directly from you, not from online sources.

It is common for people to search online for information about a counsellor / therapist before making contact. I understand this and do not discourage it.  If you do search for me, you will find a large amount of search results relating to my earlier career in financial services.  If this is in any way confusing or raises any questions for you, I invite you to bring it into our sessions so we can discuss it openly.
